Description
I Love A Lawyer provides children with a positive overview of the job of a lawyer. Through its bright, cheerful illustrations, the book shows children that in addition to going to court, lawyers spend much of their time learning about the law through reading, writing, researching, and meeting with people.
I Love A Lawyer also shows kids the various environments in which lawyers work -- including tall buildings, small offices, and even home offices -- and describes some of the many beneficial things lawyers do for our world: from helping children and the elderly to protecting our environment.
Ms. Freedenthal wrote I Love A Lawyer when she realized that children were hearing "lawyer jokes" as early as kindergarten. She hopes to "pre-empt" some of those jokes by showing children that lawyers are regular people who do many good things. It is a must read for every child with a lawyer in his or her life!

Summary: "Perfect for 5-9 year olds"
I bought this book for my 5 year old. It is most suitable for early readers and also the slightly older child who is a good reader but not yet ready for large amounts of complicated text. This book concisely explains what "the law" is. It also explains the tasks and activities of lawyers, (researching, reading, appearing in court etc) in simple one-line-per-page text.It is non-country specific in its explanation of the law, making it relevant to my children here in Australia and also English-speaking children in other countries around the world.
The language is quite basic. Introduces the child to the role of the lawyer in our society in a positive way. Also explains the different types of lawyers- those who help disadvantaged people, those who help companies etc
It has nice bold pictures. The pictures do a lot of the talking. It is a thin book, not very substantial to hold. It has a place on the inside of the back cover for a picture to be pasted of the lawyer that the child loves.
Useful for a young child as it personalizes the role of the lawyer and takes away some of the mystery. That said it would also stimulate their curiosity for learning more about what lawyers do while giving the child a good basic understanding.
Fantastic for reading aloud or for an older child to read alone. Could be the basis of a discussion in a class of young children or at home. Most suitable (obviously) for a child who has a close relative or family friend who is a lawyer. Perfect for the young child of a lawyer who is curious about what their Mom or Dad does at work.
